Birth of Microwave Oven

Originally, microwaves were used only in military and telecommunications applications - weapon guiding systems, radar  tracking and long distance communication. It was not until 1945 when the use of microwaves for cooking purposes was accidentally discovered. At that time, an american scientist, Dr. Percy Spencer who was working for a Us Defense Contractor was testing a microwave radar system when he noticed that a candy bar he had left on top of his workbench started melting when he switched on the radar that was emitting microwaves. This phenomenon completely puzzeled him. What was causing the candy bar to melt? He tried to expose other materials like popcorn that resulted to popping. This marked the birth of the Microwave Oven.
